Nominees do not have to be members of OCTELA, but each nominator must be either a member of OCTELA or a building principal.
This award began as a way to recognize and promote People of Color within OCTELA. We recognize the unique position literacy educators have in the pursuit of justice and equity because of the power of language to counteract racism and injustice through the sharing of voices and the building of empathy. The recruitment, retention, and active leadership of People of Color in OCTELA contributes to the diversity of the perspectives within the organization and the effectiveness of OCTELA.
This award shall be presented to an Ohio literacy educator who creates an inclusive and responsive learning environment for all students, goes beyond the classroom to advocate for inclusion in the community, and promotes equity and educational justice.
Nominees can be educators at the elementary, middle, secondary, or college level.
All winners receive a full registration to the OCTELA conference which includes a year's membership to the organization and will be recognized at the OCTELA Spring Conference.
